This week in Bible study, we were just talking about going back to our “first love.” Sometimes in life, we get so caught up in the business of life that we lose sight of our “first love.” Of course I am talking about God. We love Him because He first loved us. So, my Savior is definitely my First Love. But…God has also blessed me with Dan, my first earthy true love.
Here is our story: Twice in high school, I went to the Benton Harbor/St. Joseph SERVE project through Youth Unlimited. The first year, Dan was the really hot drummer guy. He was seriously hot. But I thought he was WAY out of my league, so I didn’t even think about it. Though, I LOVED that area – I hated to leave. Well, about 2-3 years later I went back down for another SERVE project, though Dan was not the drummer because he was raft guiding. I was able to get to know his parents a little more though. Fast forward to my freshman year of college. Dan apparently came for a visit to RBC, though I didn’t realize he was there. Him and his mom both recognized me as the “girl from SERVE.” Well, he decided to go to RBC the following year (my sophomore year). He came in as a sophomore as well (Dan is two years older than me).
On move in day, the joke is that Dan’s dad, Steve, got “lost” and accidentally came on my floor (girls only and Dan’s floor was a main floor, so Steve knew what he was doing :)). Well, Steve and I talked for a little bit about SERVE b/c he remembered me! He also encouraged me to go talk to Dan, who was on the floor below me. I was scared out of my mind – I took a wing-woman with me and made small talk. Well, that night, we had an all-college bonfire and Dan ended up coming to that and joined our conversation circle. Before we knew it, we were the only two left in the circle – talking about white water rafting, SERVE, and just everything. That was the beginning of it all.
Over the next few days, we talked, went on walks, and about a week or two later, Dan asked me out for dinner. I politely told him I had already eaten (Yeah, I’m an idiot :)). He went to talk to his roommate and told him I shot him down – I techinically did. So Dan called again and asked me out for dessert this time 🙂 – I kindly accepted. We went out to Applebees and just sat and talked. He had heard word that I had a heart problem, so he asked about that. I was honestly very nervous about telling him. But, I never imagined someone handling it as well as I did. It didn’t matter – he saw past it – he saw who I was and that was just part of me. I went down to St. Joe a few weeks later and we ended up dating!!
We dated for 3 school years (so 2 3/4 years). We got engaged on a hammock in July of 2005. Dan wanted to do it with some romantic setting, but he had gotten the ring 2 hours before I came down. I walked into his parent’s house, we went to lay in the hammock and catch up and botta-bing, botta-boom – it was burning a hole in his pocket, and he asked me to marry him. Of course I jumped out of the hammock (and almost made Dan flip out of it too), and said YES!! We got married on May 12, 2006, and have been married for 4 1/2 years :). Here are a few pics of us!
