A Friend’s Thoughts on Runnin’ Away With The Sabbath

A couple of weeks ago I did a post called: Runnin’ Away With The Sabbath

A few days later I heard from a good friend of mine who had been thinking and pondering the same things I have. She shared with me her concerns about how the Sabbath is viewed and ended up writing up her thoughts on what I had talked about. Well, I now want to share with you, what she talked about :). (Hope that’s not too confusing!) Thank you Sarah, for your thoughts and I am thankful we can continue in this conversation!

“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animal, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. “


I just think that when it talks about your manservant or maidservant, or the alien within your gates (I’m thinking unbelievers in term “alien”) this means workers at restaurants, gas station attendants, airline pilots, etc…the list could go on and on. Don’t you think that you are setting such a bad example when the world can’t tell the difference from a believer to an unbeliever? They think, aren’t they supposed to be at church, instead, they’re out doing everything just like me…so how are they any different? (I have heard this first-hand from someone I work with)


Also, not to mention (like Kristin had too) that the law was stated a 2nd time in Deuteronomy. Our pastor, when reading the law, always says that b/c the people didn’t listen to it the 1st time, He states it AGAIN for the people to listen to. HELLO!!!!! Anybody listening?!?!??!


And, since when does vacation trump God? Does God take a day off from you? Why is it that when you are home, you go to church, but when you’re on vacation, your faith flies out the window? No church, just doing whatever you want. And don’t give me that old line of “we’re spending time with family” or “the flights are way cheaper on Sunday” or “the Super Bowl is only once a year” or even “that’s how I was raised”. Do you think God cares? GOD ASKS FOR 1 DAY OUT OF 7. ONE DAY!!!!! Can we not just put everything else aside and give HIM 1 day!?!? (we are to worship him on the other 6 too, but on the 7th He asks for us to fellowship with other believers and hear His Word)


Don’t get me wrong, I falter on so many levels with God’s commands, but this particular one has just been on my plate lately. Anyway, I just really appreciate my friend’s post as well, it was right-on.

Again, thank you Sarah for your convictions and sharing them! I loved what she said about vacations! As much as we think we “hang on” to our faith on vacations, I think we ARE good at letting it fly out the window like she said! I am guilty of that! I loved it when she said “we’re spending time with family” as an excuse we give – so true! And treat that statement as saying “but that’s more important.” DOES God care that we are wanting to spend time with family? Not if we are putting family before Him! Yes family is important, but we can’t put our families before God! What a more beautiful expression of our love for God than to go to church as a FAMILY, worshiping Him!

This subject has really made me think and I definitely am not done thinking about it! I want to continue this conversation and I hope that you do too.
