Own You
I’m sure you’ve heard of the saying “own it”. Basically it means to be okay with who you are. Quirks and all! And that is something I think we often struggle with. Yet during this quarantine time, I’m sure you’ve had your life thrown before your very eyes, that has made you take a step back and really think about how you live. What life you want to be living. And maybe even what life you don’t want to be living. So in all of this, one thing I hope we can all walk away with is OWN YOU.
Own who God created you to be.
Think about it. When we can own who God created us to be, these unique individuals, where no two persons are the same, there is power in that. There is a sense of confidence that rises up within us. To think I am like no one else, that gives me every reason to “own it”. But how often do I wish I was like someone else? That maybe he would’ve created me just a little bit differently or allowed different things in my life? But to tell you the truth, God created me for me, to take part in his specific kingdom work. And what is that? To glorify him in ALL that I…not anyone else…does. His tasks are specific for me. So I need to OWN ME.
Own what you look like.
I’ve heard that when you look in the mirror, don’t think about what you’d change or don’t like, but what you love. What you’re thankful for. Sounds like an odd exercise and I can just hear the chorus saying, “C’mon…” but no, really. When we can own what we look like, body-type and all, there is power in that. When we are confident living in our bodies, we are more confident in life. It’s just how it goes. Is it right or wrong? Not sure. But when we can be confident in what we look like, we walk out of the house with a little extra pep. Own those wrinkles. Own that cellulite. Own those brown spots. Own that size whatever. I’m not saying don’t take care of the temple God has given you, but we have to remember our bodies will eventually pass away. Guys, I’m kind of freakishly tall according to some at 6’1″. The more I own it, the more I really don’t care and I’ve come to NOT care. And I just need to OWN ME.
Own what you enjoy doing.
Some like to crochet. Some draw. Some exercise. Some take trips. Some hunt. Some read. You fill in the blank. Have you ever felt guilty for loving a hobby that you do? Have you ever shied away from doing something for fear of what people might think? OWN IT! Who cares? I love to blog, crochet, do puzzles, read, and go on walks. I used to feel weird about crocheting b/c it was considered an “old people’s thing”. And now it’s cool to do. I love to sit and do puzzles and oh the guilt that washes over me when I see that that dishwasher needs to be unloaded or the clothes folded. But sitting down for a few minutes to do a puzzle – I just need to OWN IT. God has given you gifts that he has given no one else, to use for HIS Kingdom. Own what you love! Use something as simple as cardmaking, for his glory! And I too, just need to learn to own what I love too.
Own what you do.
What do you do for an occupation? I’m not saying it has to be something you get paid to do – just what you spend the majority of your time doing. Are you a receptionist? Are you a farmer? Are you a stay-at-home mom? A grandma? A corporate office manager? A grocery bagger? OWN IT. It’s easy to look around the world and think wow, wish I were them! There is nothing wrong with pursuing dreams, so if that’s what you want to do, OWN IT and GO FOR IT. But on the other hand, aside from all of the pressures of the world, do you enjoy what you do? Do you see yourself being really good at what you do? OWN IT! It doesn’t matter WHAT you do I feel like in God’s eyes, but HOW you do it. Is it for him? Do you work hard as if working for the Lord? Be proud of it. I struggle with this at times too. I just need to own what I do because I LOVE what I do!
Who God created you to be, interests and all, is what you should own. Just read Psalm 139. God created you for a very specific purpose. In this time of craziness, don’t forget to take a step back and think about who God created YOU to be and don’t forget what he has GIFTED you to do.
