A Life With Limits
When you think of the word “limit”, what do you think of?
Doing without something? Going as far or as fast as you can without breaking the limit? Do you view limits as something TO break?
Limiting in our culture is often seen as a negative thing. We consume ourselves with getting the latest and greatest, and will do whatever it takes to obtain it. We will work until the wee hours of the morning to get that project done, wearing ourselves thin. We will turn on the tv and watch it for hours, without thinking about the impact it will have on our children and families; all because we don’t have a limit.
But when it comes to simplicity, that is exactly WHAT we need.
Limits.
More specifically, limits when it comes to media. How much of our time is taken up by sources such as facebook, twitter, skype, emails, blogs, surfing the internet, tv, cable, netflix, dvr, movies, you name it? How much time in a given day, do you spend on these media types? How much time do you lose because you are stuck in the pit of having no limits? No limits on how much time you spend on the internet, looking at all the latest newsfeeds on facebook, shopping around for your dream wardrobe someday, or trying to even live vicariously through a star by searching everything about their life? This all may sound so silly, but lets be honest. How many people are stuck in this rut because they have no limits?
Simple living involves making time for the things that are most important to you and that compliment your values and priorities. When you find yourself stuck, is it because you have no limits? What would your life look like if you did start to sent boundaries?
Take a look at your day – count up how many hours you spend on any form of media. Are you satisfied with that number? If not, consider setting a limit. Think about what it might take, what boundaries you need to set, and the discipline it might take, for you to live a simpler life.
