A Rushed Existence
Do you ever feel like you’re running around, trying to do all the things, and yet you feel like you are getting nowhere? Do you ever have the fear of falling behind in life, that you end up living a rushed existence?
I find our world is all about “where” you are going in life. Who do you want to become? What are you working towards? Our world puts so much pressure on success and how we get there – if we get there. It’ this rushed existence all in attempts to “get ahead”. But my friends, God cares more about who we are becoming in the process, than where we are going here on this earth. Now don’t get me wrong, we are headed towards our eternal home, but our citizenship is not here. It’s what we do FOR Him in the process, that matters most.
I struggle with this as well. Call me Martha because I’m so terrible about just sitting and resting. I feel I have to be crazily productive in order to feel like I accomplished something and feel like I’m “going” somewhere. But no where in the Bible does it talk about hurrying as a characteristic of God. In fact, the Bible talks more about HIS perfect time, not ours. Hello Psalm 45 – Be still and know that I am God! God doesn’t see our rushed existence the same way we do. And it’s often the idol of comparison that gets in the way of our full pursuit of Him.
Comparison is such a dangerous, horizontal viewpoint that we can get so easily dragged into. It’s easy to look out horizontally and see how everyone else is living their lives, often in a rushed existence. We see what they bought, what they accomplished, who they are becoming. But God did not design me to be the like the person next to me. People, we care more about our accomplishments than God does. A rushed existence to be like those around us, is not the life God desires for us. He desires us to seek Him in the process and isn’t that what we should be desiring too? He just wants His name glorified. We don’t need to DO more so that we can live like everyone else, but just BE where God has us and to live in contented existence in His presence.
