Comparing Yourself To The Invisible
What picture do you have of yourself in your head? I’m not talking about the one that you see yourself as right now. That’s a whole different story. I’m talking about the one you are striving for? You know, that image that you dream of being someday?
What does she look like? What does she do? What does she wear? What type of walk does she have? What does she drive? What type of house does she live in?
We were ALL able to answer those questions. The big questions are though, what are the answers. Who is that person? Let me go even a bit deeper, what would God say of that person?
My friends, I find myself here too. I don’t mean for you to read this and feel guilty. Don’t worry, I feel some sort of guilt as well. What I am trying to do though, is call us to a different purpose in life. A different meaning. Not one that the world wants of us – a meaning that is all about our physical bodies and what we accomplish. No. A meaning far greater and far deeper. A meaning that will give us eternal satisfaction and contentment. A meaning far greater than we could ever imagine.
You see, those questions above – those are all things that fade. All things that could be taken away from us tomorrow. Some of these things, maybe you’ve had taken away. The loss of a job, an accident that caused some major physical scarring, unexpected weight gained and you had to buy a whole new wardrobe. All things that can completely change who we are. But these are all things that we can rise out of. Not by the world’s standards, but by God’s grace and persistence in our life.
But it’ll take some persistence from you and me too. That person that you have in your head? She’s often invisible. She really isn’t someone real. She may be a composite of a number of people, from different places, and different walks of life. But often she isn’t someone real. And that is where we have to stop looking out and start looking in.
So let me ask you this. What talents do you have? What spiritual gifts do you have? When you feel on fire for God, what are you doing? When you feel closest to God, what are you feeling? What do others commend you on? When you feel like your best self, what does her heart look like?
We ARE ALL able to answer those questions. Were you real with yourself? Or did you skip over some of those questions? Not really thinking about them? Do you truly know who God has created you to be? Do you know for what purpose He has you here on His earth? Do you know what He wakes you up for every day? I do…
He wants YOU. He wants what YOU have to offer. If I’m honest, I have to admit He doesn’t need us. God can do anything without anyone’s help. But you know what? He wants to include us. He loves us so much and wants a relationship with us, that He wants YOU. ALL OF YOU. He wants ME. ALL of ME. Kristin who makes mistake after mistake. Day after day. He wants KRISTIN. Not this invisible person that we compare ourselves to and will never measure up to.
Look at who you are. Let’s even take a look at our physical appearances. I have cellulite. I have wrinkles. I have a forever pooch. I have weird lines on my thighs. I have scars on so many places of my body. Scars where scars probably shouldn’t be. Let me get a little more real. I have a scar on the top of my be-hind. Oh, yes I do! I had a pilonidal cyst about 10 years ago and had to have it surgically removed – which is a cyst on the tailbone. I mean who has a surgery for that?
God does care about our physical bodies. Don’t get me wrong or read into that too much. But what I am trying to say is that God sees FAR beyond just our physical lives. He looks much deeper – deep into the depths of our hearts. He doesn’t look at that invisible person. He sees you for who you are and THAT is who He wants. Right now. Not tomorrow. Right now.
Start marveling at who God has made you to be. When we start to do that, we can help others marvel as well, and in turn, point them to the One who created that “marvelousness” in the first place!
