Day 2: Catalogs/Ads
What: Catalogs and Ads
Why: How often do you actually buy something from those catalogs or ads? How often do you look through the Sunday ads mindlessly, not really looking to buy anything new? I think catalogs and ads are the biggest time wasters if you not looking to buy anything. Catalogs and ads only feed into our consumerism-need to have it-attitudes that only clog our minds and fill our instant gratifications.
How:
1. Look over your counters, coffee table, magazine racks, and night stands. What occupies them?
What catalogs do you receive in the mail?
2. Make a list of them. ALL of them.
3. How to clear the clutter and live with less of them? UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THEM. The amount of time it will take you to either go online to find the number or email address to let them know you want to unsubscribe, will probably be shorter than the time it will take you to look through the next “issue” or ad. It may take an extra 3 minutes to take the action, but it will be worth HOURS of your time later.
4. If you receive ads in the mail that you really have no control over, don’t waste any time – dump them straight into the recycling bin. Then you are not tempted to even look.
Confession of the day: It took me a LONG time to realize that looking through ads (or even on Pinterest) does effect my selfish desires. I am still working on it, but ridding our house useless catalogs/ads has helped tremendously
