Day 34: Belts
What: Belts
Why: Do you have belts laying on the floor of your closet? Are you running out of nails to hang your belts on? Do you sit and wonder “what belt should I wear today?” In living with less, it is important to lessen the choices we need to make each day – even when it comes to belts.
How.
1. Pick up, take off, whatever you need to do, to gather all of your belts.
2. Line them all up and ask:
- Does it fit me?
- Is it worn out?
- Do I have an outfit to wear with it?
- Do I have too many?
3. If you are realizing you have too many belts, when just a few would do, it is time to purge of them. How many people pay attention to your belt anyways? Yes, there are those belts that are more for “decoration,” but how many does one need? Time to donate the ones you do not use. Put them in the donation box
4. Organize. There are a few ways to do this without having to buy another piece of “equipment”. You can easily hammer in a few nails into your closet wall to hang them (if you use a big enough nail, you can fit multiple on a nail). You can also drape them over the closet bar that you hang your clothes on (see picture above). Also, hanging them on hangers works as well. These are cheap and easy ways to deal with belt “clutter.”
5. Enjoy fewer choices – even when it comes to belts.
Confession of the Day: Belts are something I don’t struggle with having too many of…except when it comes with an outfit and you can really only wear it WITH that outfit. That is when belt clutter happens! When I was able to figure out what outfits or jeans I needed belts for, I was able to get rid of the ones I would never need because I had a belt that would work. Yes, there are certain belts that would go with one outfit – but I didn’t need them. In order to live with less, it is about making decisions that force you to live with less. Having a fewer choices in life makes life that much more simple.
