Day 79: 9 Tips on Organizing Seasonal Decor
What: Seasonal Decor
Why: Do you dread taking out your seasonal decorations because you are overwhelmed by the amount you have? Do you open the boxes and wonder where you are going to put it all? Do you even know where everything is? Do not let seasoning decorating depress you – time to organize and get rid of the unused and unwanted items!
How:
1. Find all of the seasonal decor you own – Easter, Spring, Summer, Fall, Thanksgiving, Christmas
2. Go through each item and decide:
- Do I use this?
- Do you know why you have this item?
- Do I want this?
- Do I have too much?
- Do I have a place to put this? (if you can’t think of a place, get rid of it!)
3. Separate items into seasons.
4. Find or buy containers to store items in. It may be helpful to buy colored bins (after Christmas, you can find the large red/green containers for cheap!). If you are able, keep them all the same size so that they are easy to stack.
5. Label each container
6. Good Rule of Thumb: Set limits for yourself – have only 1 or 2 containers per season.
7. Store bins in a place that is out of the way, since you only use them once a year.
8. Purge after each season.
9. Donate unwanted items
Confession of the Day: The only season I decorate for is Christmas. As I was decluttering our Christmas decor, I realized we had items just because they were Christmas-themed. They did not serve a purpose and I had no attachment to them. They only added clutter. To the donation bin they went. Same with ornaments – some were falling apart, some I had no idea I why I had it, and so out they went. I have learned that the more decorations I have, the more clutter it adds to a small space. I am learning to have a REASON for everything I have – even when it comes to seasonal decor. Storing them all in one bin has been a tremendous help when Christmas comes around. I know exactly where to go to find all I own. I also store my Christmas wrapping paper and bags in a storage bin so that I know exactly where to go when it is gift wrapping time. Living with less also means not owning something just because it adds to the collection. If you don’t use, want, or have a place for something, it should not have a home in your house.
How do you organize your seasonal decor?
I love these challenges! I read this post yesterday and knew this was the next thing I needed to do. To be honest, I was kind of dreading it, but my kids helped me go through Christmas décor today. My daughter was a great help. I hope I am going to be able to get rid of one storage tub. Thank you for this great series!

Isn't it easy to just let things pile up :)? I bet it feels good to have the Christmas décor DONE and gone through for the upcoming season. Often we just put everything out and then at the end of the season, we get rid of things – now you will have less to put out AND less to put away! That is AWESOME that you persuade the kids to do it with you – you are teaching them so many valuable lessons by showing and doing it together! Thanks for sharing 🙂
