Gardening Season Has Begun!
Gardening is something I have loved doing. Back in St. Joseph, we had a little 6 x 8 plot – must remind you we had only .15 of an acre. Yes, that is a decimal BEFORE the 1. So it was a small plot of land and a small garden. But we were able to have a sufficient garden, after we learned a few things along the way!
Moving to Minnesota, we are surrounded by acres upon acres of fields! When you see tractors that are about the size of the house we live in (maybe a little bit of an exaggeration), it is hard to not get the itch to garden. Many folks out here garden and after hearing from too many that they plant a garden every year, I knew that if we could, I wanted to.
After “surveying” the land for a week or two, we found a spot that got mostly sun, which looked like a prime location for a garden! Because of all of the rain we got, I ended up just digging it up myself. It was maybe a little bigger of a task than I had anticipated, but after a few days work on it, the garden is now planted!
Dan and I one night after his church softball game headed over to the store and bought plants and seeds, but we also realized we needed fencing and poles – things we did not take with us from Michigan. It felt so good to prep a garden – there is just something about working hard, in the dirt, that is completely refreshing for me!
Here is what we planted:
strawberries (giving them a whilrl!)
asparagus – see ya in 2 years!
sweet potatoes
beans (green and yellow)
carrots
onions
peppers
snap peas
tomatoes
We have never planted sweet potatoes before (and I LOVE them) so we’ll see how it goes!

In the process of moving, I found these stakes/row markers where you could write what was in the row on the stake – I was going to make my own, but then I found these! They say when you move, you find treasures you thought you never had – SO TRUE!

It is now a finished project! The dirt here is AMAZING! So rich and dark! Hopefully the garden becomes something someday!
