Having More, When You Have Less
I do not kombucha (not even sure I spelled that right)…
I do not have eyelash extensions…
I do not have many “said” clothing trends…
I’m not on a specific diet (wait…maybe low-salt for heart reasons)…
I am definitely not what you’d call “cool” or “trendy” by any sense of the word! As Dan and I often agree, I am most comfortable in my exercise clothes.
And now that I’m in my 30s, and 4 almost 5 years in, I have realized that I could spend a lifetime searching for the things that will never make me happy. Things of this world.
I went on a huge organizing and minimalizing run about 5 years ago, and to this day, I am so thankful I did. I had purged of umpteen items in our home that I knew were just adding clutter. I finally felt like every item in our home had a purpose, had a place, and I was free of clutter.
But even more than the physical change and empty spaces in our home, I felt I finally had MORE, when I had less.
In a world of “proving” what we have and don’t have thanks to social media and our natural ability to compare ourselves to one another, we are left with the lie that having more will truly make us happy. But when will that “more” idea stop? At one point will having more, truly satisfy our heart’s desires?
And honestly I cannot answer that because I think it is different for everyone. Another question to ask is, “How am I using what God has given me, for HIS glory and not for my OWN gain?” When we keep an eternal perspective on what we have, it gives our belongings purpose, instead of just taking up space in our homes. And for me, I realized that I was able to give more of myself when I had less in our home.
So I want you to ask yourself, do you feel like you have too much? What would it take if you cleared a bit out? What would that make more room for? And finally, when you look around your home, how can you use what God has given you, to bless others and glorify Him?
I am not a minimalist and do not plan to be, but I do know that I truly feel we have more when we have less! And when what we have, has a place and a purpose!
How about you? What is the current state of your home? Do you feel the items in your home have purpose?
