Home Tour – Front Closet
AWHILE back, I started a blogging series that was a tour of our home (click link to check out the rest of the tour). Well, one room I did not do was a closet that Dan had redesigned. So today, I’m continuing a tour of our home, by taking a look at our front closet!
Above is what that entryway used to look like and below is a picture of what it looks like now, looking towards the closet door.
You may be wondering, why show a closet? Seems like an odd place to do a home tour in, but I think closets are some of the most crucial places in a home! Closets not only HIDE “the stuff,” but keeps “the stuff” organized! A well set up closet, for YOUR needs, will go a LONG ways! Truthfully, there was nothing really wrong with the closet before. It just didn’t have the shelving we needed. Before, it had a good rack for hanging coats, a place to put items underneath, and above the coats. What we needed though, was more shelving. For months, I had games still in the moving boxes because I had no where to go with them. I had stacked things as high as they could possibly go, without toppling over. Oh, and I couldn’t access anything easily. It was driving me crazy!
Then I went on Pinterest. AHHH! The options are endless! Actually it might have been Google Images. Nevertheless, I found a closet design that I knew would be perfect for our front closet. It is the only closet we have inside the home that isn’t connected to a bedroom, so I had to set it up just right. A lot had to fit in there!
I asked Dan if he’d be willing to build me some shelves and he said if I could find a picture, he could try and replicate it. Not going to lie guys, he NAILED it! Every bit of it. Below is truly, an exact replica of what the picture looked like and it is EXACTLY what I needed! Check it out…
He divided the closet in half and built a wall, with a top shelf on it. We do not currently have anything way up there because it’s not needed (yet). To the top left we hang our coats we do not use frequently (after winter, it will hold our winter coats). Then there is a shelf where I have my weights and exercise mat. Below (bottom left) is our hats and gloves box, with my black box where I organize my papers. That space was intended for our vacuum (and it’d fit perfectly in there), but I decided to utilize the space even more. Then on the far left stands our step stool.
Top right of the closet are two shelves that hold our games. I first had all of our games on the top shelf, but then Dan asked why I was stacking them all up when I had the room to make two shelves? So on the second shelf, I have the games that Mazy plays with, so they are easy to access and my puzzles! There is a small window in the closet, so Dan had to be creative with where to put the shelves!
Bottom right (next two shelves). Top one I have two baskets that contain a lot of miscellaneous items. Basket on the left contains all of our small games, decks of cards, dice, etc. Basket on the left contains household items like batteries, flashlights, small glues, and really any random household item that doesn’t fit anywhere else in our house. The next shelf is a bit bowed because we are too cheap to buy a whole piece of plywood just for one shelf! Here I have Mazy’s old booster (for when we have younger children over), two candles, and my box of cards. Random, but easy to access items. Just below that, sitting on the floor, is my craft bin! This a favorite bin of Mazy’s! It is a bin filled with all kinds of paper, pipe cleaners, glue, string, ribbon, buttons, and really any craft supply you can think of! I used to have this bin upstairs, but after my surgery, I couldn’t go up and down stairs as frequently as I used to, so I thought it would be great to have it on our main floor. Since this was our only storage area, I knew it had to fit in here somewhere, and it sure does now!
It amazes me what a simple tweaking of a closet can do! No more stacks of boxes toppling over! Granted I am thankful for a husband who has a creative mind and can look at a picture and recreate what he sees! No way I could have done this myself! Strangely, this is one of my favorite spaces in our home because I can access everything so easily! I oddly find joy in that type of thing in life! Organization, recreating a space to fit our needs, oh man…gets me all giddy!
