When preparing your garden, obviously most of the focus is on the garden itself.
What you may forget about is that your preparations prior to, will save you so much time in the end AND the beginning (of next year).
One of the best ways to keep your garden organized year after year, is to
keep a record of what’s in it. Such a simple concept, but how often do you forget to record what you planted, after you actually planted your garden? And then wonder what is not coming up and even where you planted what?
Here are a few ideas on how to PREPARE to organize your garden, with a simple binder:
1. Diagram of what is in it:
- Dimensions of perimeter and of each row
- How many plants/seeds planted in each row
2. Take pictures – you could write on each picture, the details of each part of the garden
3. Make copies of your seed packets (both front and back) and keep them in your binder, in order of how they are set up in your garden. Otherwise, make a detailed list of when to plant your seeds.
4. Type up a list of the nurseries or stores you purchases seeds from, how much of each, and how much you paid
5. Write down what you want to accomplish, what to replace, and what you want to change for the next year, so that your garden eventually becomes everything you want it to be!
6. Record your yields for each item planted.
7. Store in a place you will REMEMBER. Because this is something you will not reference all that much, keep it in a “safe” place, but not too safe, where you won’t remember where it is!
Keeping a record of all of these items, keeps you from guessing year after year, what to buy, how much of it, and when to plant it. I know that this may go above and beyond what you need, but this is for those who each year, are guessing what to do, causing frustration.
Gardening should not be dreaded, but something you look forward to each year, knowing you will be blessing you and your family with fresh produce!
