Lower-Tox Living: Filter Drinking Water

I didn’t understand the need to filter our drinking water, until I had my bone marrow transplant. We have city water…what possibly could be wrong?
After learning that any toxins that entered my body, could be harmful to me and add to the risk of infection, I started to realize HOW many things in our world are contaminated!
One of them being our drinking water.
I know this one sounds a bit “out there”, especially since we live in a country that has filtered water. We’ve humbly gone on mission trips to countries where any consumption of their water could cause major digestive and internal issues. It makes me so grateful to live in a country that offers CLEAN drinking water, where for most of us, it wouldn’t make a difference!
But after going through a BMT, I have since realized that our water maybe isn’t as “clean” as what we think it is. We are blessed to live in an area where our water is tested constantly. And even though that is such a gift, there are still contaminants that seep through like bacteria, chemicals, and sediment. These are constantly being checked and even though our water does pass testing needed, it still does have harmful contaminants in it, just not at catastrophic levels.
And with our water, we have OLD pipes. So I firmly believe that there are contaminants in our pipes that probably aren’t great for our health. I smell our water and then that of filtered water, and there is a difference. I can’t help but think that maybe there is something in there that shouldn’t be, like chlorine.
So why do we personally filter our water?
It’s just a small step in eliminating harmful chemicals that we would otherwise be constantly ingesting, due to our intake of water. Filtering water improves the taste and smell and is basically an extra backup to the water treatment that our city water already goes through, in case something is picked up in our old pipes as it moves along the way.
For you, your water might be great! I know for us, it is wise for us to filter due to my weakened immune system, old pipes, as even city water can still contain contaminants.
If you’re looking for a water filter that is inexpensive, but still gets the job done, this is the one we use:

There are SO many options out there, and my DREAM would be to get a whole house water-filtration system, but we aren’t quite there yet. After doing much research, I found this filter to be certified and does a great job at removing chemicals. Yes, you do have to replace the filters, but it amazes me what our water tastes like when we don’t filter! This option also comes in different sizes, so if you have a larger family, a bigger option might be better! We do not have a refrigerator with a filter, so this was our next best option and it has worked GREAT for our family!
What are your thoughts on filtering water? What has been your experience?
