Lower-Tox Living: Use Glass Containers

About 13 years ago, I partnered with a company to promote the use of glass containers vs. plastic. At the time, I don’t think I realized what a difference glass makes versus plastic! There was no kickback, just a passion for promoting the benefits of glass versus plastic. We made the switch to completely glass that many years ago and wouldn’t you know, we are still using those same containers today! So why is it so important? Here are a few reasons why if you desire to live a lower-tox life, switching to glass containers makes a difference:
HEALTHIER
This is a silly thought, but I know we all wouldn’t “choose” to put toxins into our food, right? Well, that is what we do when we use plastic containers – they leak harmful chemicals (like BPA, phthalates, microplastics – which can cause hormonal and developmental problems) into our food (especially when warm). Glass is non-porous, so it doesn’t allow any leaking of chemicals!
LONGER-LASTING
How many times did I ruin a plastic container because of what I put in it? Spaghetti sauce, a certain spice, pureed carrots, chili, you name it! With glass, there are no stains, ever, and so you can use them for years and YEARS to come! I am still using the same containers we received as a wedding gift, 20 years ago.
VERSATILE
With glass containers, you can cook, bake, and reheat food in them, with no worry of leaky chemicals getting into your food. Plus, glass is MUCH sturdier than plastic, so you don’t have to worry about dumping your meal all over the floor. That means you can also use glass, better than plastic, to freeze leftovers or any food in them! I remember using plastic to freeze and the plastic would crack, meaning when it would eventually thaw, the food would leak out too. Glass also doesn’t alter the taste of foods, which can happen in plastic containers.
CLEANER LOOK
Not that we should buy or use something just to make ourselves “look good”, but glass just makes food look better, doesn’t it? Meaning, you can serve out of glass dishes, easier than you can plastic. This is just another way glass is versatile – you can also use them as serving dishes! Speaking of “cleaner”, glass is MUCH easier to clean than plastic and you know what’s in the container because it’s clear.
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
Glass is simply more sustainable. It’s recyclable, versus plastic, where if it’s not a certain “number” it gets tossed. Plus, statistics show that a high percentage of recyclable items still get dumped. Glass is reusable, year after year, and simply lasts much longer than plastic.
You can get simple glass container set with lids for a reasonable price on Amazon! It may seem like an investment from the get-go, but like I said, I am still using the containers we received 20 years ago and never have had to replace them! I did replace 2 lids, but that’s it. That’s a money saver in my book!
