My #1 Decluttering Rule
One of the ways I like to keep our home feeling well, like home, is to keep it decluttered. But with that said, the space between the walls of our home can get extremely cluttered at times! Just think about a rainy day. That right there will bring all of the items on our shelves onto the floor; it’s inevitable. Yeah, it’s a good idea to put things away before you take something else out, but even I wrestle with that idea after a full day in the house.
At the end of the night though, the 3 of us always pick up. It’s a family rule. The house can get as messy as it wants during the day, but in the end, we go to bed at night with a picked up home. And every time we pick up what we do have, I think wow, I’m glad we don’t have more! But how are we supposed to keep our homes decluttered, when kids bring in so much stuff from who knows where? Our daughter is into rocks, stones, sticks, leaves, feathers, etc. Not to mention school papers! S0…
The one rule that I always try to live by is this: ONE IN, ONE OUT.
It’s simple: anytime you bring something new or even used into your home, one needs to go. This is the case with ANYTHING – toys, clothes, shampoo, magazines, food, movies, you get my drift. Before you buy another kind of shampoo, finish the one you currently have. Before you order another magazine, unsubscribe from the one you don’t enjoy as much. When you buy a new shirt, donate another that you no longer wear. This is one of the best preventative tools you can use to ensure your home doesn’t get overwhelmed with stuff. And to ensure you don’t either!
