You Be You…As A Child Of God
I was driving down a country highway the other day and there was a billboard plastered against the fields of corn that read…
YOU BE YOU.
Like every billboard, it was standing for something. Luring us to some sort of ideology. A way of thinking. A certain perspective.
I guess I was caught up in thought by it that I didn’t even figure out WHAT it was saying, except that it said, YOU BE YOU. Now granted, this saying is nothing new. In fact, this was very clever advertising on this company’s part because I would say this is a “buzz” phrase right now. You are you. You are who you are. Right?
So why did this peak my interest? I think it’s all in how you define the “you”. And that’s where it’s left up to the individual person, and that’s when it can get a little hairy. As a Christian, we can be our unique selves, as a CHILD OF GOD. You see, as humans, we come under the authority of God because we were CREATED by God. And the creator has control over the created. I know the last thing people want is to be “controlled”, but want to know where the safest place to be is? Under the boundaries, rules, and control of God.
God has set up boundaries for us, not because he wanted to be mean like kids think their parents are when they set up rules, but He has done this out of love. Out of protection for us. Out of his grace and mercy.
Joshua 1:8 says, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
Psalm 19:7-11 – “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.”
So if anything we ARE is out of line with his character, we have stepped over the boundary line. We have hindered our relationship with Christ. Me being me is okay, to a certain extent. I’ve totally said, “You be you”…but on that day, strolling down the country road, I couldn’t help but reflect and wonder. We were uniquely created by God (hello Psalm 139), but all within the realm of being a child of God. So you be you, as a child of God!
