Exploring Minnesota – New Ulm
Last night Dan and I wanted to go exploring. I told Dan that at some point we HAVE to go to New Ulm, where New In Town (the movie) is based out of – I remember reading somewhere though, that the movie is filmed in Canada. So I am not sure what parts are actually in New Ulm and what isn’t. Regardless, it was fun to see the city! It took us about an hour and a half to get there (I think, or less…) and the drive took us through many little towns! Here is the City of Corn – hence the big ole corn stalk (I think this is in Olivia).

The Hermann Heights Monument – it is closed right now, but in May you can climb up the stairs and get an awesome view of the city, I read.

After driving for awhile, we landed at this restaurant – apparently they have the best German food in town, the Kaiserhoff. There apparently are more Kaiserhoffs around the U.S. It was a very fun place to go to – Dan got brats, German potatoe salad, and sauerkraut. I got a pork chop with a mushroom gravy with spaetzels (spelling?) and red cabbage (did NOT like the cabbage). The food was very good and it was just a fun place to go – it’s not often I see these authentic German restaurants around.
We did not see anything that looked familiar from the movie, but it was fun to just drive and explore. This past week has been spent trying to just figure things out here, so it was nice to take a break from that. I would like to go back to New Ulm in the summer to see all the historical sights sometime!
It’s CRAZY to think that we have been here only a week! Sometimes it feels like shorter because we still are trying to find our way around here, yet at the same time, it feels like longer because we honestly feel comfortable. At dinner we were saying it would be nice to just KNOW where everything is and how to do something, but we have learned so much and it is so nice to be able to do it together! Dan had a wonderful first few days at work, which all glory goes to God. He said it was so hard to know where to start, but he’s got a to-do list going, which helps. I know I sound like a broken record, but we truly feel blessed to be here. Today I cleaned the house for the first time, which I found fun :). I also made a bunch of frozen meals, which I should share the recipes with you on another blog post sometime. We are looking forward to more explorations! We may enter some towns and wonder why in the world we drove that far, but who cares! That’s the fun of exploration – being able to laugh with your best friend over the trivial things in life, while spending quality time together, learning more about what God created.
Kristin!! I would totally go to New Ulm this summer with you! I love looking at the historical sites around the area! 🙂 You should head to Montevideo sometime and check out the Pioneer village! But go this summer, when you can walk around! Then the boys and I can go too! They are awesome sites! <3
Wow we just have so much in common! Dan and I both enjoy historical sites. We will definitely have to go both places this summer!
You had fun cleaning? The only time that happens to me is if I have company to talk to and keep the kids out from under my feet! April is right though, Pioneer Village is SO much fun! There are some really cool historical spots down in the Minnesota River valley about 30-45 minutes south of us too … old farmsteads, sites of Indian attacks, and 2 miles west of Pburg is a farm that actually is listed as a historical site because Indians once camped there on their way to the massacres in the river valley.
Ang – that is good to know about the Minnesota River valley too! I never even heard of it :). That is why asking people where to go (people who live here) is so much easier instead of meandering around towns, aimlessly. I LOVE old farmsteads and what not!
