Who You Are Becoming Is What Matters Most

One thing I LOVE to do is coach.
When we lived in Minnesota, I had the privilege of coaching at the JV level and assisting for a varsity team. I loved every moment of it. And now, I have the joy of assisting as an 8th grade coach. Of course I love the game of basketball – was fairly obsessed with the game growing up. But after being forced to quit the game I loved, due to a rare heart condition, God taught me that life is more than any circumstantial event. More than a game. More than a sport.
It’s about who we are becoming through it all. The wins and losses will occur. It’s a given. No one will EVER be perfect; it’s a guarantee that they will make a mistake. Lose a game. Not make the shot. Or score the goal. Our society puts an INCREDIBLE amount of pressure on the performance. Making the team. Getting the goal. Moving up in the ranks. But all for what?
Who you are becoming matters more than how you are performing.
Having to quit the game I loved growing up, I’ve since learned that the things I thought were important, don’t hold the same weight anymore. Life is not about being the best. Some might argue that (as I sit here and watch the Olympics while typing this), but truthfully speaking, at the end of the day, life is not about the gold medal, for that is not eternal. What matters is WHO WE ARE BECOMING in the process.
We can easily think that the purpose of life is about success. The medals. The award. The promotion. The status. The “next thing”. But our purpose can only be found in the One who created our purpose – GOD. If we are striving after something other than God, we are choosing to be separated from our purpose and reason for existence. We are choosing something that we think is “greater” than God, but we will NEVER find satisfaction there.
One of the common questions kids and adults ask is, “What is my purpose?”
I have the answer!
It’s only to be found IN GOD. GOD is your answer. Pursue God. Become more like HIM. That is where you will find purpose. Living out your purpose isn’t a checklist, like many of us think it is. Do this, get that, buy this. Achieve that. No, it’s in BECOMING MORE LIKE HIM.
That is where true joy is found. That is where your purpose is found.
Let’s start pursuing HIM like never before and before you know it, you’ll find your purpose. And you’ll soon realize that who you are becoming in HIM, matters more than anything else.
