Blow A Trumpet For God
NIV – 1 Corinthians 1: 25-31 –
26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[a]
The Message – 1 Corinthians 1: 30-31 – Everything that we have – right thinking and right living, a clean slate and a fresh start – comes from God by way of Jesus Christ. That’s why we have the saying “If you’re going to blow a horn, blow a trumpet for God.
“At least I don’t do THAT…”
“At least I don’t look like THAT…”
“At least I make more money than HIM…”
“At least I own THIS type of car…”
“At least I live a better life than THAT person…”
These are all thoughts we have at some point. You can’t deny the fact that the human drive is all about getting to the top. To the top of what? The social ladder? The economic ladder? What IS the top? Why do we continually seek after something that we know NEVER ends? Why not seek something that DOES have an end – ETERNAL glory with God?
Have you ever thought about blowing your trumpet for God? I was a trumpet player. I really enjoyed playing the trumpet growing up, in church, and even in those long parades. I looked forward to it. Never have I thought about the analogy of blowing my trumpet for God, like it says in The Message.
I too often blow my horn for myself. I think in my head “well at least I don’t do that” in comparing myself with someone else. Just being honest. Yet I read the passage from 1 Corinthians and I have ZERO room to brag. Especially after the health difficulties God brought me through – the sole reason I am alive (both spiritually and physically) is because of God. I have ZERO room to boast. The lessons He taught me through those experiences only gives me sole reason to blow my trumpet for HIM.
Being a Christian, sometimes we can get caught up in our Christian bubbles. It doesn’t matter WHERE you live. Every single place I have lived in my life, it is easy to live in “the bubble.” Where instead of looking to God as our sole provider and power, we compare ourselves with other Christians, compare our lifestyles, compare our actions, etc. But how far off are we? WAY off.
God did not woo us into salvation with money, power, and success. Yet as Christians, we often THINK that that is how we were – our sinful human natures get the best of us. No, God wooed us in by faith through grace. In fact, it was death – the death of a Savior – someone who was a humble servant – who hung out with the weak and poor – that has brought us to LIFE. Not money, wealth, right living, etc. None of us, NONE of us, deserve salvation. There is NOTHING we can do to deserve it. We can have that clean slate – but that is not solely our own doing – that’s God’s grace.
So when we start to think about blowing our own trumpet, think about who gave you the power. Who gave you a fresh start. Who gave you the ability. Who gave you the success you have. Blow that trumpet for God. Because as it is written in verse 25 – “For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.”
Blow your trumpet for God.
