Day 10: Socks
What: Socks
Why: Do you ever open your sock drawer and want to wear a certain pair, but can’t find them? I have had that struggle for years for a few reasons – I tried to fit too much in one drawer, I had too many socks, and my drawer was just not organized.
I knew it was time to organize my sock drawer AND live with fewer socks. Considering I do laundry a few times a week, it is a guarantee I will never run out of socks. If I do run out, either I am WAY behind on laundry or I need a few new pairs.
Over the past year, I have been trying to wear the socks I have, without buying any new ones. I have done pretty well! I have officially worn out a few pairs since then, which has lessened the load in the drawer. I am a “Smartwool” sock girl and unfortunately I wore out 2 pairs because everytime they were clean, I would wear them. As I have been cleaning out my drawers, I have found different methods of keeping them organized.
How – Here is the best way I have found to organize my socks:
1. As always, take ALL of your socks out of the drawer.
2. Make sure each has a match (my white socks were a chore!)
3. Check to see if any of them have holes in them – throw them away if they do or fix them.
4. Make sure you wear all of them – if you don’t, throw them away.
5. Now comes the fun part – the organizing! Fold your socks in half and then in half again (so they looked rolled up). Now “layer” them in the drawer, vertically in rows.
6. You now can SEE all of the socks you own. You can even color coordinate them by browns, blacks, whites, etc. so that if you are wearing black pants, you know RIGHT where to look! You will also know what color you need more of.
Confession of the Day: It took me a LONG time to figure out the best way to organize socks. I know you may think “they are just socks,” but I just got sick of digging through my socks, finding a matching sock, and THEN putting them on. Now it is a grab and go. So whether they are thick or thin, this process really works!
