Easy Homemade Pillow Coverings
One thing I do not have a gift in is home decorating. Yes, I enjoy having things on the walls, but I wouldn’t say I have an eye for where and how to put things on the walls or in the home. More or less, it’s a long process for me. Though one thing I can do, is sew. I am no seamstress and no gown making girl, but I have to say I can make a mean pillow case! I don’t say that to make you think highly of me because honestly? You can make a mean pillow covering too.
We have a little nook in our dining room that would be a great reading space, but it just looks out to a fence with brush. Nevertheless, it’s still a sitting area and could use some decorating. That’s when I snagged my sister and took her to Hobby Lobby with me to help choose fabric. I know that’s supposed to be the fun part, but that was an overwhelming part for me, hence that need for help! Again, home decorating isn’t necessarily my gift. Give me a paint can and a paintbrush and now we are talking!
After finding the right pillows and fabric, that meant it was time to make some coverings, but make them so that I could change them out if I wanted to, depending on the season. Oh the joys of making things by hand! So if you are looking to add a bit of decor to your home, while making it versatile, check out this DIY pillow case tutorial!
Find a pillow you would like to cover and cut fabric accordingly, for just ONE side.
Fold over one side TWICE, pin, and sew.
This is what it should look like after sewn
Place pillow on fabric and fold un-sewn side over pillow. Then fold over sewn side, so that it lands in the middle of the pillow
Cut off excess fabric from un-sewn side if needed
Fold over edge, pin, and sew
Place pillow on RIGHT side of fabric and line pillow up so that the edging that you want showing, is folded over FIRST
Then fold over the other end
Pin edges and remove pillow
Instead of pinning, you could also use your thumb as a “ruler” for how far to sew in on the edges
While sewing the edges, make sure each edge is lined up correctly so that no edge is “missed”
The sewing is complete!
Reverse pillow case
Insert pillow into larger end first
That’s it folks!
You can do this if you have a simple sewing machine and a pillow that needs a cover!
