Homemade Crockpot Apple Cider
I am realizing that the older I get, the more I enjoy fall. I always used to be a “summer” girl, and probably always will be to some extent, but there is something about the smell of fresh cider, apples filling up the displays at grocery stores, the smell of pumpkin-everything, that gets me excited for the change of season.
Dan and I once had the opportunity to make homemade apple cider back in Michigan with our youth group kids, with a homemade press from someone from the church. It was such an interesting and neat experience and since then, I have just had a love for apple cider; especially the homemade goodness.
We had received a batch of apples from some friends of ours and I knew immediately what I wanted to try and do with them – try to make homemade apple cider.
I wanted to try a crockpot version because that seems to be all I have time for these days, and oh if you want your house to smell like a mercantile shop or like fall, crockpot apple cider is the way to go!
I would recommend making sure you plug IN your crockpot – after a few hours, I wondered why I did not smell it, but then I realized I unplugged it. Smooth move, Kristin! Nevertheless, after I did, our house smelled like apple cider goodness.
I would recommend refrigerating it, which I think helped “set” the taste even more. I tried it straight from the crockpot and though it was still good, I preferred it cold. Also, I did not have a fine mesh sieve, so I used a colander, but a mesh sieve would probably help get all of the spices out, and not have them sitting at the bottom.
Here is the recipe I used:
