How to Make Slime
Does anyone remember GAK? That ooey gooey slime that made a rather disturbing sound when pushed forcefully into a container? I remember making it with my classmates in 3rd grade and who knew slime would still be a hit? I figured if I could make it in 3rd grade, I could still attempt to make slime in my 30s.
Our daughter has always been into anything she can mush, push, pull, and squeeze. From putty, clay, to even slime. Slime is often found in the dollar bin at a store, but you get such a small amount and I feel it just doesn’t last as long as my little 4-year-old had hoped.
I have attempted to make slime at home several times, and each time, it just doesn’t turn out quite like I had hoped. After making a few tweaks and trying a few different ways, I have FINALLY found a slime recipe that WORKS. A recipe that uses many of the same ingredients that my other recipes have used, but for some reason, this recipe has the right amounts. So if you are looking for a quick, easy, tried-and-true slime recipe, here it is folks!
UPDATE: After letting it set for over a week, it STILL was pliable and useable, unlike other homemade recipes I had tried.
SLIME
Ingredients:
- 2/3 c. glue
- 1/4 c. water
- 1/2 t. baking soda
- 2-3 c. shaving cream
- 2 T. contact solution (contains boric acid and sodium borate – try Equate brand)
- Food coloring
Directions:
- Mix together glue, water, and baking soda
- Add shaving cream and mix
- Add contact solution and food coloring
- Add more contact solution as necessary (I had to add a little more so it wasn’t so sticky)
- ENJOY!
Have your child help with the first 2 steps:
After adding the contact solution, the slime becomes a bit harder to stir. But keep going!
Take the slime out of the bowl and add a little more contact solution, if needed.
Never have we had such pliable, non-sticky slime!
Our daughter couldn’t get enough of it!
It was so easy to play with that our daughter added some water beads to it, for added texture and sensory fun!
Side Note: After sitting for a few days, the water beads will eventually pop out of the slime and roll all over the place if not prepared.
