Because RLT to many is a newer “wellness” device, I thought I’d share some basics with you about what it is,
Red Light Therapy Basics
What is Red Light Therapy?
Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to hone in on our mitochondria (the powerhouse inside our cells) to:
- Increases ATP (cellular energy)
- Decreases inflammation
- Increases blood flow
What does LED mean?
LED emits light at a lesser power (or irradiance) and covers a larger surface area (than a laser red light therapy device), making it perfect for helping treat muscle groups or targeted areas. LED red light therapy is a newer, safer, and more accessible for at-home use compared to laser therapy, making it a cost-effective.
What is the difference between red and near-infrared light?
Red light therapy often uses both red light (this is visible light in the 620 – 750 nm wavelength range) and near-infrared light (NIR), which has a wavelength above 800 nm, which you cannot see, even though it penetrates deeper. When it is given at a high enough power, they can penetrate the skin barrier better than other colors on the market, with NIR reaching even deeper into tissues.
What about blue light? That can help with acne, but if not used correctly, can affect your circadian rhythm and increase aging.
This is from the LUMEBOX website. You can see at 850nm, it can reach at least 5 millimeters below, making it more effective!
Which mode on LUMEBOX should I use?
Depends what you want to use it for! Do you want healthy skin, muscles, joints, to just relax, or something else?
Something to Remember:
- Use the light you can see (red) for things you can see, like skin, cuts and scrapes
- Use the light you can’t see (NIR) for things you cannot see, like joints/muscles.
If in doubt, just use both RED and NIR at the same time (unless it is for skin, where the ideal wavelength is red)!
How long should I use red light therapy for?
Everyone is different! Just like everyone responds to the sun differently, it’s the same with red light therapy. Some need a lot and some little.
Just start slow. For example, if you are using it for your face, start with 5 minutes, 4-6 inches away from the skin, 3-4x/week. Then increase duration and number of times if you tolerate it well.
For deeper tissue, like muscles and/or joints, on the NIR setting, ease up to the full 12 and hold closer to the skin.
General rule is that more is not always better – it’s best to do it about 2x in the same area in a 24 hour time period and try not to do it back to back.
How long does it take to see results?
Consistency is key! For the skin, it may take up to 6-8 weeks to notice a visible difference, but from personal experience, like with my neuropathy, I noticed a different after 10 days. But with deeper tissue use, you may notice results after one use. It is completely dependent on the person, like all things!
Do I need to wear eye protection?
Short answer is YES. If you are looking at it, 100% wear the goggles! If you aren’t looking at it, you don’t need to. Lumebox suggests to wear the goggles when your eyes are in the beam window, just to be safe.
Will red light therapy work through clothing?
It’s best not to, as it decreases its effectiveness, and can increase heat through clothing.
Can you fly with LUMEBOX?
Yes! It’s great for your sunburn, sore muscles, feet, and even bug bites!
Travel with it like you would a laptop while going through security, by taking it out of your carry-on bag. If you check it, make sure the airline is okay with the battery before you check your luggage.
