Reupholstering Chairs
I have been wanting to reupholster our chairs, but haven’t had the time to do it. When we first bought our table from an acquaintance of our realtor, the fabric was rather hideous. So we reupholstered them right away. After 5 years of use, with a LOT spilled on them, I decided it was time to do away with the old and bring in the new. Two years ago I made curtains to go in our dining room, and loved the material. Dan thought the stupendous idea of reupholstering the chairs with that same fabric. My only concern was that JoAnns didn’t carry the fabric anymore. Lo and behold, they still had it in the red tag section! AND…red tag fabric was 50% off! So, I got 1 yard and 2/3 of this fabric for 10 bucks! It is regularly $40/yard. That is what I call savings! I was ecstatic! So my afternoon was filled with reupholstering! Maybe some of you have older chairs like ours and want to reupholster – it is VERY easy! Here is a little “how-to” if you would ever like to DIY (do it yourself). In order to remove the original fabric, unscrew the screws from the 4 corners. The padded part of the chair will come right off.
Next, the fun part (actually not really) – remove all the old staples.
I used a straight-edged screw driver to get them started…
Measure the original pieces of material, so that you have an idea of how big to cut each piece. Just measure one, and know that all of them will be the same size.
Use a staple gun to attach the fabric to the chair base. After about 50-75 staples, I realized that something was wrong – my staples were WAY too big and they wouldn’t go through the wood. I called Dan and he told me that they were too big so he generously picked up smaller staples – it saved OODLES of time! Should’ve realized that earlier! Make sure to pull fabric tight before you staple each time. After you have the fabric stapled on, all you need to do is reattach the padded cushion to the chair! Basically just reverse what you did earlier.
