Sermon Notes For Kids
Every Sunday growing up, I looked forward to our church’s children’s bulletin – a little booklet of activities for kids to do, that well, were basically done before the service even started! Nevertheless, it was always fun to do, helping get the idea of what the sermon would be about, in our little hearts and minds. Ironically, when we joined our current church, they used some of the same material for their children’s bulletin! Oh the memories!
Now that Mazy is older, she does well with following along in the service and listening to the sermon, but I always felt I could be doing more. I’m a note taker, so I’m always intently listening, marking up my Bible, and writing down notes, which Mazy could do too, but I’m not sure she could keep the pace up. So she usually just draws a replica of the banners hanging on the pipes of the organ.
For years now, I have been contemplating creating a special “Sermon Notes” guide for her, and finally finalized it. It’s nothing special, but it’s something that I hope she finds useful while she is listening, helps her think deeper about the passage, the service, and the message, with the ultimate goal of her tucking God’s Word in her little heart for use as she walks through life.
Basically I designed this for kiddos who are past the “Children’s Bulletin” stage, but before they are able to take notes on their own, with this being a bridge between the two. A place for them to dig deeper into the Bible, doodle if they need to, listen for words they don’t understand, think about what God is teaching them, and choose a favorite song. Because by writing it down, hopefully it’ll stick in their minds a bit longer!
Just to clarify, the OT and NT part stands for Old Testament or New Testament – those words are too long to fit in that area :).
Also, my hope is that during Sunday lunch or sometime after, we can talk about what she wrote, help her understand the things that are confusing, and ultimately help her apply what she has learned to her life. And then eventually “graduate” to taking notes just on a blank piece of paper.
