The Freedom Dreaming Creates
Are you a dreamer? I am married to one!
I enjoy dreaming, but I would say I am more of a realist. I think about the situations right in front of me, without dreaming beyond. But then again, I am a planner, so therefore I do think future-oriented, by default.
When I was a kid, I dreamed of playing in the NBA. I dreamed of living in a big city. I dreamed of doing mission trips non-stop. I dreamed of working at an inner city ministry. I dreamed of getting married. I dreamed of having children. I dreamed of living in an old house. I dreamed of writing a book.
Some of these dreams have come true. Some of them, well, not so much. But one thing I do know, is that I haven’t regretted dreaming about these things. Like I mentioned earlier, I am married to a guy who dreams. I can often find him caught in a thought, dreaming about something. They aren’t necessarily unrealistic dreams – he just enjoys thinking big! He is a go-getter when it comes to his dreams. Shoot, he used to dream of being a white water raft guide and he DID! To me, that’s a crazy thing to do, but I am SO proud of him for following his dreams! It was BK (before Kristin), so I didn’t have all the worry about him when he was a raft guide. Whew! If you’ve ever been white water rafting, just imagine being the guide! Yikaroos!
I think dreaming to some extent is really healthy. My grandma once said, if you fulfill all of your dreams, you won’t have anything left to dream about. So true, huh? Plus, I think it’s in dreaming, that we stop putting God in a box. We stop putting our capabilities in a box. In dreaming, we realize that maybe God is calling us to something crazy. Something that may seem a bit impossible!
Now there is a healthy and unhealthy level in dreaming, I think. When you dream so much that you are missing what is right in front of you. Dreaming so big that you become ungrateful for what you have. Dreaming so much that you lose sight of what God is calling you to today. Like everything in life, everything in moderation.
Is your dream Biblical? Would God approve of it? Is it of His character? If so, RUN WITH IT! Pray about it, dream about it, and maybe, just maybe, one day it will come true!
I dreamed of writing a book someday. I remember having a bucket list on the very first blog I had. One of the things I had listed was “write a book.” Never thought it would come true, but it is! Never stop dreaming!
Dreaming is freeing. Dreaming tears down the walls we build around ourselves. Dream big.
What are some of YOUR dreams??
