I have struggled with my closet.
It’s not that it isn’t big enough.
It’s not that I don’t have enough clothes.
It’s not that I don’t like my clothes.
The problem is that I have too many, I have plenty that I like, and my closet has clothes in it that I don’t need. I spend too much time trying to figure out what to wear, but feel like I have nothing to wear. So what is my problem?
The problem is that I don’t LOVE some of my clothes, so I don’t wear them. The problem is that I have TOO many, and I don’t know what goes with what. The problem is that I have bought clothes, but after a few months, they end up in the donation pile because majority of the time, they have shrunk and aren’t comfortable anymore.
What I want to do is:
- Spend less money on clothes
- Spend less time trying to find the “right” thing
- Spend my time in comfortable, casual, and “me” clothes
- Spend time wearing all of the clothes I have
You may (or may not have) heard of a “capsule wardrobe.” Being someone who likes to live with less, the idea behind a capsule wardrobe has always intrigued me. I liked the idea of everything having a purpose.
What is a capsule wardrobe? Here’s my own opinion of what it is:
- simple and basic coordinating clothes that are essential to YOU
Let me explain further.
A capsule wardrobe is filled with the clothes and accessories that represent you. They can span all 4 seasons in their own unique way, but can be mixed and matched. Each piece of clothing has a purpose, all while having a minimal wardrobe.
It sounds complicated, but the end result is simple.
Again, less clothes. less money spent on clothes, less time spent on clothes, and more time spent on the things I want to spend time on.
Anytime I need to put a different set of clothes on, I want to be excited to put it on, not wishing I had a different wardrobe. Not wishing I looked different in them. Not wishing…for something different.
Maybe you have struggled with the same things I have and am struggling with. Maybe you too, have thought about having a capsule wardrobe, but have wondered where to start? Well, I am going to be doing a short series on how I created my own capsule wardrobe and how you too, can do the same, in YOUR OWN unique way! What my wardrobe will look like is probably nothing what yours will look like. And that is the beauty of it. Many websites have a list of what the “it” or “must-haves” are for a capsule wardrobe. They will say you need to have 37, 50, or 25 pieces of clothing to create your capsule wardrobe. I am not going to tell you how many pieces you need to have because your wardrobe needs to be unique to YOU. Plus, many of those lists do not describe or reflect me. I am a pretty casual dresser and for me to have oodles of “office” clothes would not be a good use of my time and money spent on clothes.Whether you are looking to build your own capsule wardrobe or just ensure that everything you own has a purpose, I hope you enjoy these next few posts. and in the end, feel like you can continue to live your life with less!
