Allowing God to Direct Our Steps
In their hearts humans plan their course,
but the Lord establishes their steps.
A person’s steps are directed by the Lord.
How then can anyone understand their own way?
What
do you think about these verses? How do they make you feel?
Overwhelmed? At peace? Do you find yourself wondering why God doesn’t
show His plan in a more timely fashion?
Well, that’s just
it. It isn’t about our time. It isn’t about what we think is right. I
LOVE what the second verse says: “How then can anyone understand their
own way?” It’s kind of like “duh, why waste time trying to figure it
out?” I think God does want us to plan – to a certain extent. What that
boundary is, I can’t put it into words, because it is directed by
faith.
How do you feel when plans change? I am a planner. When
plans change, I right away think of it as a negative thing. Think about
the last time your plans got switched around – in fact, it might have
been 5 minutes ago. Did you accept it? Did you take it in stride?
Because I am such a planner, I KNOW I don’t accept changed plans with
grace and gratitude.
Why not? The Bible is very clear that
God directs and establishes our steps. You may wonder, “why would I see
a dead car battery as a good thing?” “Why would I see losing a child as
a good thing?” Don’t worry, I have often wondered those same questions
and in fact, still ask them daily. What I fail to understand is that God
even though confusion, frustration, and zero understanding may be
happening on my end, on God’s end, it is perfect, completely planned
out, and right on schedule.
We can’t understand. We are not
all-knowing like our heavenly Father is. We can plan to a certain
extent, but we have to let our faith guide the rest of the way. Walking
into the unknown is not easy, but believing that God has our back is
essential and reassuring.
What steps does God have you walking
on that are hard to understand? Where has God taken you and where does
He have you now, that has given way to some understanding? Like I said
earlier, we don’t always fully understand God’s plans for our life,
especially in losing children. But we DO know that God has both Dan and
I, and our gestational carrier on an amazing journey. He has led us on
an amazing journey. And it is a blessing to see where God is taking us,
the new opportunities He has given us, and the paths He is leading us on
– all for His glory and goodness.
Praise be to the Lord.
