Be That Hawaiian Shirt Guy!

“Hey, what are you wearing?”

Have you ever asked a friend, spouse, or sibling that question?

Anyone who has ever asked that question, often asks it because they want to look stylish for the occasion without standing out too much. It comes out of a desire to fit in, right? We all want to fit in and don’t want to be the crazy one at the party wearing a Hawaiian shirt when it was a fancy nancy gathering.

We all want to please someone or something. Whether it be with what we wear, how we act, you name it. Every minute of the day, we are attempting to please SOMETHING. And often we are willing to do more than we realize to please culture and/or please those around us.

Sadly enough, I see Christians willing to change the Word, in order to please the culture. 

In what ways have you seen Christians re-word what the Bible says, just to fit what the culture “wears”? Changing the verbiage in attempts to please the masses? To gain popularity? Or go back to the drawing board asking, “Did God REALLY say that? That can’t be what he meant…” then change it to sound more appeasing and plausible? It’s easy to want to “look right” for culture and as Christians, we so swiftly put aside our convictions to fit in.

But how dangerous and blasphemous it is, to change the Word in order to please the culture. How dare we think that we know better than God? How dare we even attempt to redefine what God has already clearly defined in Scripture?

In what ways do you find yourself asking, “Did God really say…”? There is no better handbook of how to encounter culture with the Truth, than the Bible. We will never fit in because our citizenship is not here – it’s in HEAVEN (Phil. 3:20). So when you start to feel like you’re not fitting in, like you’re the person with the Hawaiian shirt on at a wedding, rest assured that you’re right where you’re supposed to be.
