My Thoughts On “After Death”
Have you ever thought about what happens when you die? I’m sure most of us have, to some degree.
Well, from Angel Studios, who brought to you The Chosen, Sound of Freedom, comes a new movie called, After Death, is coming to theaters on October 27. This movie is based on the true accounts of New York Times Bestselling authors, survivors give us a peek into life’s biggest question: What happens when we die?
After Death is a gripping feature film that explores what happens after we die, based on real near-death experiences, conveyed by scientists, authors, and survivors. From the New York Times bestselling authors who brought you titles like 90 Minutes in Heaven, Imagine Heaven, and To Heaven and Back, emerges a cinematic peek beyond the veil that examines the spiritual and scientific dimensions of mortality, inviting us to wonder: Is there life after death? Here’s the trailer:
I had the privilege of watching this movie and after viewing it, I found myself torn. Torn between the reality that God can do anything, while also wrestling with the idea of experience over the authority of God. I have no doubt in my mind that God can work miraculously through his people. I feel God has given us experiences that have “beat the odds”. But I believe what it comes down to, is that after we die, we only know what God has given us in the Bible. So at what point does human experience, trump what the Bible says or doesn’t say? The movie definitely confirms there is life after death, which I believe is its goal. But I also feel there are pieces missing that are key to what life after death is about. Salvation and communion with our Savior. The movie talks about what survivors have seen, which is light, and in some cases, darkness.
Again, this is where I struggle. I’ll admit, I can quickly be skeptical. But some skepticism isn’t always negative, as we are called to hold everything in this world, every message, every sermon, every ideology, up to the light of the Gospel.
The movie talks about what survivors have seen, which is light, and in some cases, darkness and I have no doubt that God has given experiences to people for a specific reason. And as a believer in Christ, I feel all of our experiences should draw us closer to Him. With that said, this movie is very detailed about the accounts of those who experienced life and death situations and how according to science and medicine, they shouldn’t have made it. God’s ways of showing His power are endless and He can change the course of anyone’s life in an instant. What it doesn’t talk much about is HOW to get to heaven, the work of the Holy Spirit, and Christ’s death on the cross, which is the whole reason we are given the gift of life after death.
Now after watching this film, absolutely, it reaffirms that there is life after death. But I believe that because of what the Gospel says, not because of what a movie has drawn me to conclude. Can God use this to draw people to Himself? Absolutely, because God can use anything. But I don’t want to diminish the fact that people experience life after death because of the power of the Holy Spirit and Christ’s death on the cross.
I found this movie to be very interesting and helped me confirm`my own beliefs of what happens after we die. But I also found myself wanting to go back to the Bible and just rest in what God has given us in His Word. The Bible is not insufficient in what it tells us, but tells us everything we need to know for salvation. Heaven isn’t about seeing people, but about serving our Lord and Savior, worshiping the Creator God, who rescued us from our earthly state. Every experience in life is allowed by God and used for His good purposes, but I also never want to elevate experience over the authority of the Gospel and our need for salvation. One can believe in life after death, but do they believe in THE ONE, Jesus Christ, who is the giver of eternal life?
Is it worth seeing? Yes, I think it is, in the light that these are experiences of people of whom God created. When you see the pictures of what some have gone through, it is incredible what God has done in their lives. Just remember that as Isaiah 55:8-9 says,
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
As much as we try to understand what life after death looks like, let us rest in the knowledge that it is incomprehensible and let it spur us on to live lives of gratitude to Him, in anticipation of what’s to come. Let the Bible comfort us, not just what human experience tells us. For God, is our ultimate authority.
