Baby/Genetic Update
Baby Update!
This week I decided it was time to fill out all of the genetic paperwork that is needed for me even to have an appointment (which is in July). I knew there were a lot of questions, but wow, were they detailed! Thankfully some of the questions were similar to the embryo donation questionnaire, but this form definitely had some odd questions! Here some examples:
When I was a baby, when did I hold my head erect, turned front to back, back to front, crawled, stood alone, sat alone, walked, babbled, spoke first word, and spoke sentences. I was so thankful my mom kept a good record of when I did most of these things, so I could answer almost ALL of the questions! Who would’ve EVER thought I would’ve needed this information? Let this be a suggestion to new parents – if you haven’t recorded these things, it may be helpful to your child someday! Not that you would ever wish them to have to go through genetic testing – I’m pretty sure my mom didn’t record those things and think “oh, my child might have genetic testing done someday” :):). I guarantee she didn’t – but how awesome that God used info from that long ago and used it for today!
They also had a lot of questions about my mom’s pregnancy – exposure to x-rays, chemicals, rashes, fevers, you name it.
Then they wondered about the medical history of my parents, sisters, and grandparents.
It’s just amazing what they think of to ask, in order to get a basis to do a genetic test. Granted I have NO CLUE what is all involved in a genetic test, but it is interesting! Of course we pray that they do not find anything genetically wrong (which we would be surprised if they did), but if there is an issue, it would be good to know. Not that it would change ANYTHING that we are doing, but knowledge of medical issues isn’t a bad thing. As I have filled out the what seems like umpteen pages of paperwork, I have learned a lot about my family and how few heart problems there are. My grandpa had a heart attack, but it wasn’t anything “hose-oriented” that was wrong – he had bypass surgery. My “hoses” as Dan calls them, were messed up – we have no known history of anyone else having that issue. That is good news to us!
So, we wait til July to see if there really is a genetic issue. Until then, we try to patiently wait for the road ahead!
