What Message Does Your Life Speak?
In a few months our daughter will turn 10.
For some, that may seem very young, to others, that may seem like a lifetime away. As she walked across the stage at her school’s Christmas program, my husband leaned over to me and whispered, “There goes your mini-me!” #truth.
I’ve let that sit in my mind for a bit and yes, we look a LOT a like (more so when I had hair), but it also made me think about the influence Dan and I have in her life. We don’t want her to mimic us, but God. Though we do take to heart what the Bible says about impressing God’s commandments on her heart.
What message is our life sending? Everything we do, flows from our hearts. And what we put in our minds, comes out in our lives. Our world tells us to accomplish more, do more, and obtain more. Is that how the Bible says we are to live our lives? It’s not!
The Bible calls us first and foremost to love him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. In doing that, we learn to do all things for HIM, not to accomplish more for ourselves. We also learn to heed to the command of Sabbath rest, instead of doing more and more. We also learn the virtue of contentment, instead of needing to always obtain more.
As I read through those categories, I found myself stuck in the middle. Do you too? I feel this pull of what the world requires, but I know deep in my heart, what God requires. And whatever I choose, is what I represent to Mazy.
When she leaves our home and starts her own, what will she say we impressed on her? What message have we sent to her? What have we talked with her about? Obtaining more? Accomplishing more? Doing more? Or one of living her life for Christ alone, by loving God and loving others?
I desire to create an environment where she will succeed in whatever circumstances God allows in her life, instead of creating perfect environments where she will succeed through obtaining, accomplishing, and doing.
We’ve got several years before my mini-me flees the coop, but it’s never to early to start instilling the truths of God’s Word in her heart, through our conversations, what we focus on around the dinner table, and how we are to treat others. May we all choose what God asks of us and pray against what the world asks of us.
